YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit Initiatives

Connecting all people to their potential.

The Y is the leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community. Our initiatives address critical needs in Southeast Michigan.

Food Distribution & Meal Programs

The Y believes that children deserve every opportunity possible to learn, grow and thrive, and the meals we serve help more children get the nutrition they need for good health. As food insecurity rates across the country have skyrocketed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the number of children facing hunger is at its highest in 25 years.

Drowning Prevention

Over 79% of children in low-income families have little to no swimming ability, putting our children at an unacceptable risk of drowning. Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity.

Teen Programs

Teens who lack role models and access to enriching life experiences often make poor decisions that cause long-term hardships. From providing opportunities to give back through volunteering, to helping secure jobs at local companies, or helping discover their artistic edge, the Y is helping young people become socially responsible citizens who know how to work together, accomplish goals, and problem solve.
