What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a paddle sport that can be played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-sized court. The game is played with a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball, and composite or wooden paddles. The rules are easy to learn, making it accessible for beginners, yet the game offers a thrilling challenge for advanced players.

Why Pickleball?

What You Need to Know about Pickleball at our YMCAs

1. Paddles and Balls: To play Pickleball at the Y, you should bring a paddle and a few indoor pickleballs.

2. Pickleball Nets: If the nets are not already set up during Open Pickleball time when you arrive, ask the front desk to assist you in setting them up. If it is apparent that you are the last group playing, ask the front desk to put the nets away.

3. Playing Priority: The order of play is determined using the paddle stacking system on one of the tables in the gym. Stack the paddles from left to right. Winners stay on the court
unless eight or more people are waiting, then four players should switch out after a game.

4. Pickleball Instruction: Information on rules and the basics of the game is available on the internet. USA Pickleball is a great place to start. The best way to learn is to practice on a court with an experienced player. If there is an open court during one of the scheduled sessions you can use it for this purpose.

5. Fees: Pickleball is free to members. Non-members can play for a daily rate of $5 by purchasing a guest pass.

6. Leagues: Our YMCAs do not currently offer Pickleball Leagues.

7. Court Time Reservations: You cannot reserve court time for personal use.

8. Support: If you have a pickleball question, please ask one of the representatives at the front desk and they will get an answer for you.
