Medicare fitness programs at the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit
The pandemic hit us all hard. As a non-profit, the Y has had to make some tough decisions. Decisions that will ultimately strengthen the sustainability of the Y in the communities we serve. And help us to continue to inspire and motivate you to stay strong as well.
- For Medicare fitness programs, we are only partnering with, Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage, Silver&Fit, Peerfit Move, now FitOn and Renew Active; we will no longer offer SilverSneakers as of January 1, 2024.
- For former 2023 YMCA SilverSneakers members, we are offering the new Y Legacy Membership a deeply discounted, all-access membership for $25.50 a month.

What changed in 2024?
As of January 1, 2024, the YMCA no longer offers SilverSneakers. We only partner with Silver&Fit, Peerfit Move and Renew Active for Medicare-funded fitness programs.
What does this mean for SilverSneakers members?
Members using SilverSneakers will need to adjust their memberships before the new year. Members can enroll in the Y Legacy Membership for a reduced rate or enroll in of the three Medicare fitness programs we support: Silver&Fit, Peerfit Move or Renew Active. Availability varies by health insurance provider. Contact your health insurer to learn which Medicare fitness program they can offer you.
What are the new options for Medicare fitness members?
Our Medicare Fitness Members are a significant and valued part of the YMCA community, and we hope they will choose to stay with us. In addition to Blue Cross Medicare Advantage, Silver&Fit, Peerfit now (FitOn) and Renew Active, we are offering a new membership just for them called the Y Legacy Membership. The Y Legacy Membership will be exclusively offered to current YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit SilverSneakers participants.
What does the Y Legacy Membership cost?
This deeply discounted, all-access membership will cost $25.50 a month, half of the standard membership price. Adult+1 will be $40 a month. Financial assistance is also available based on need.
Why did memberships change in 2024?
The pandemic hit the YMCA of Metro Detroit especially hard. We’ve closed three branches and are working to strengthen our current locations and memberships. As a non-profit we’ve had to make tough decisions. One of them is ending our partnership with the SilverSneakers program. But we will be offering other Medicare-funded fitness programs as well as our new Y Legacy Membership.
How can members update their memberships?

Will there be a disruption in benefits?
No, by adjusting memberships before January 1, 2024, members won’t experience a disruption to the classes and offerings they know and love.
Great News for Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Members!
Effective January 1, 2024 Your YMCA Membership with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is covered! This means that any Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Members that were enrolled in SilverSneakers in 2023 can continue to have a free YMCA membership in 2024.
Also note that all Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Members are eligible for a free YMCA membership even if they were not enrolled in SilverSneakers in 2023.
Simply visit your local YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit location and tell them you want to enroll in the Blue Cross Membership. That’s it! You must be an eligible Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage Member to qualify. In order to keep your YMCA membership active each month we ask that you visit one of your YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit YMCAs a least once per month. We would love to see you more.
Please note while the SilverSneakers program is no longer available at YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit locations, the YMCA Legacy membership will be available at no cost to you, thanks to the generosity of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
