Campers’ Football Dreams Come True

Campers’ Football Dreams Come True

Around 150 lucky day campers from the South Oakland Y got to participate in a pro camp held by Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, thanks to a generous donation from Meijer and Proctor and Gamble.

Lots of children grow up dreaming of playing football with the pros one day, and even more dream of someday getting to meet their favorite player. About 150 day campers from the South Oakland Y realized that dream last week, when Meijer invited them to a pro camp with Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

In celebration of the opening of the first Meijer store in the city of Detroit, Meijer and Proctor and Gamble sponsored the camp, held at Madison High School in Madison Heights. The kids ran drills, played flag football, and got to have items signed by Suh and take a group photograph with him. The best performers were awarded prizes at the end of the day, including jerseys and autographed items.

The Pro Camp served as a field trip for the South Oakland campers, some of whom loved football, some of whom were Lions fans, and some of whom had no familiarity with the game — but they all enjoyed the chance to learn from a pro player.

Suh is known both for his aggressive style of play on the field and his willingness to give back to the community.Every kid left with a group photo as well as a team photo signed by Suh. suh-2

Every day camp does field trips weekly, but the Pro Camp will probably go down in history as this summer’s high water mark for counselors and camper alike! Day camp goes on for four more weeks at every branch. Check out a video of the day’s events below:
