Twenty (20) families were adopted benefitting eighty (80) lives, of various racial and ethnic descent, from across the tri-county area.
Fifty-eight (58) were children and twenty-two, (22) were their caregivers. One family was living in their car. Two families lost everything in a fire.
Most families were experiencing economic hardships related to COVID-19 such as job loss.
The families were incredibly grateful to be selected. One grandmother, raising seven (7) of her grandchildren, fought back tears to thank us repeatedly for helping her out this Christmas.
Each family shared their wish list which was assigned to a Y elf to fulfill. Families not only received toys for their children, but car seats, pots and pans, winter coats and groceries for the week, basic life necessities thanks to some amazing Y partners.
The YMCA is so very grateful to Bank of American for their generous gift. It allowed our YMCA to double our adoption efforts from 10 to 20 families and feed an additional 30 families, youth and seniors across the Metropolitan area with groceries and prepared meals.
A special thanks to Johnson Controls https://www.johnsoncontrols.com/ , as well, for their generous gifts to one of our families.
We also send a shout to Detroit’s Finest, who also adopted a family. Thank you #7 Detective Unit.
And, a great big virtual hug to Holiday Market https://holiday-market.com/ for providing meals to the families.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is committed to community and family, health and wellness and children and youth development.
