This week, the YMCA of Metropolitan bids farewell to AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Oak 5, who has been helping us refurbish five of our facilities over the past several weeks. From August 7 to September 11, the seven team members painted, re-floored, acted as camp counselors and performed other landscaping and maintenance duties.
Some of the team’s biggest projects, among many others, include repainting the fitness room at Macomb YMCA; spreading mulch around the grounds of Boll YMCA; removing 192 dead or dying bushes along the pool fence at Downriver YMCA, repainting the lobby, bathrooms, and men’s showers at Lakeshore; and improving the Farmington YMCA Wellness Center by repainting, removing the old carpet, and laying down with rubber floor tiles.
The team has greatly enjoyed their time with the YMCA and in the Detroit area and encourages everyone to check out all of the improved facilities.

The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. AmeriCorps NCCC members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
