Every YMCA branch plays an important role in their community, and that role is different depending on the branch. In Farmington, one special role they have is to be a valued caregiver for children. They serve kids at 15 schools with quality, affordable before and after care so that parents whose work schedules preclude them doing drop-off or pick-up can have their kids cared for. “We keep them safe in a fun, educational, caring environment,” says branch executive director Laura Perlowski. They also provide daycare for infants through age 5 using the research-based High/Scope curriculum.
There’s more to the Farmington Y story than that, of course, and the Y is sharing its story with the community at the Power of The Y breakfast at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Farmington Y, 28100 Farmington Rd. Four members will share their stories: Grant Anderson will share how the Y helped him recover from an automobile accident, and board member Catherine Cost and her two daughters will talk about the impact of the Girls on the Run program last fall. There will also be professionally produced videos about various Y programs.
The event is a chance for the Y to show the community how they change lives for the better every day, and a kickoff for the Annual Campaign. The Annual Campaign provides scholarships to people who otherwise couldn’t afford to participate in Y programs. All money raised stays at the branch to help people right in the local community.
Admission to the breakfast is free but reservations are required. Register online or call (248) 553-4020.
