Girls on the Run (GOTR), a transformative youth development program that teaches life skills through running lessons, was an official charity partner of the 2014 Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon on Oct. 19. On race day, the GOTR support team of 104 adult runners ran a combined total of 1,617.1 miles through Detroit and helped to raise $10,873 to allow more girls to participate in the program.
On average, it costs $160 for a girl to participate in GOTR, with running shoes included. Each season, nearly half of the girls who participate are doing so through scholarships.
Tara McMachen, who completed her first half marathon and raised $1,300 along the way, said it was a rewarding experience.
“You have no idea how great it felt to run for my favorite charity and one I have been so involved with,” Tara said. “I’m proud that I was able to push myself to run so far (and for so long)!”
The Girls on the Run and STRIDE 5K will take place on Sunday, Nov. 16 at Kensington Metropark at 11 a.m.
