Meet Elizabeth! She has been crushing her goals at the Farmington Family YMCA and we are so proud of her! We love hearing about all our members do. Here is her story.
“I first joined the Y at the very end of 2018 simply to have a way to get out of the house and be active in the winter. I find it easy to be active in the warmer months but the shorter days and colder weather was getting to me. So I decided to join the Y and made a goal to go swim once a week to feel like I was getting my use out of my membership.
The very first day I joined the Y, I ended up meeting some people who swim with the masters swim team. “Masters” is the name for swimmers in the 18 years+ category. They were friendly and encouraging. I found out that they swam every week so started coming at the same time. I was a lot slower than them so I swam in a different lane but enjoyed having other people there.
What started out as a one-time-a-week activity soon developed into a passion. I began swimming in the mornings a couple of times a week, started watching training videos on improving my stroke, and made many, many new friends through swimming at the Y.
I also set new goals for myself. One was to start swimming with the masters instead of just beside them. I accomplished that by the summer. And in the fall, I felt ready to join their FAST Swim & Triathlon Club. I joined and on October 13, competed in my very first swim meet in my entire life. I was thrilled with my results. I swam 8-10 seconds faster than my expected seed time and got first place in my age group in four events.
I now am at the Y about four days a week for swimming or lifting. I feel so grateful that joining the Y helped me to discover an entirely new passion, gave me a whole new circle of friends, and has made me the most athletic I’ve ever been in my life.
Can’t wait for my next swim meet!”
Go Elizabeth!! You’re crushing it!
