We are thrilled to announce the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit will be doing even bigger and better things for kids in our community as a result of a recent partnership with Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).
As part of its initiative to improve the health of children in Michigan, MDCH has awarded the State Alliance of Michigan YMCAs with a $400,000 grant to work with schools and communities to teach kids healthy habits and address childhood obesity. The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit received $45,000 to provide healthy programs for kids during out-of-school hours. Examples of these programs include Girls on the Run, Detroit Swims, sports camps and other activities at the Detroit Leadership Academy and Detroit Innovation Academy.
“The Y has made a national commitment to being the largest and healthiest national non-profit provider of early learning and after-school programs,” said Matt Longjohn, M.D. MPH, a Michigan resident and the National Health Officer for the YMCA of the USA.”This grant from MDCH will allow us to advance that goal and to publicly demonstrate what is achievable statewide when Ys work together to serve children and families, and to strengthen our communities.”
