Artist’s Statement
Detroit is the city that I call home, where I was born and grew up. As a child I would hear stories about how appalling Detroit was; that the once magnificent city lay in ruins. My creative vision is to document the growing city and show that Detroit is more than just a city of abandoned buildings and decay, and is truly a city of life and grandeur. Detroit has shaped and inspired every aspect of my life, and I share that through my photographs. This is my home through my eyes. Through my lens I convey my endearment for my community and the wonders that I encounter along the way. The most important qualities of my photographs are their honesty and the emotional response they incite. My philosophy is that a photograph is more than just a picture, but is a moment caught in time; that the image itself is a living breathing entity. Through my photography I find the calm and beauty within a chaotic urban atmosphere, waiting patiently for hours in all types of weather to capture that one perfect moment; without patience, that moment can easily be missed. Seizing the moment when color, light and motion come together is my commitment to excellence in my craft.
With that identity, I was inspired to create my artist organization called The MATI Group. For the last two decades we have curated art exhibitions comprised of unknown and emerging artists from throughout the city in an effort to create a unified artistic community. Artists are the cornerstone of a growing city; through art I hope to continue to bring people back to Detroit; to show that Detroit is full of culture, an ideal place to spend time with family and friends; that Detroit should no longer be feared but embraced, and its growth welcomed.
